Bioengineering

Rapid prototyping techniques have been used in medical applications for the production of dimensionally accurate physical models from three dimensional (3D) diagnostic images. The advent of 3D imaging modalities such as Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has enabled the in vivo non invasive extraction of high resolution patient specific anatomic information. The combination of 3D Imaging and Rapid Prototyping techniques has been used in maxillofacial surgery for the production of customised prostheses for cranioplasty and for preoperative planning.
